What Is The Best Material For A Smoking Pipe?

 Throughout the history of smoking pipes, many materials were used to create these awesome looking pipes. Earlier, pipes were made of just stones, but nowadays, a vast range of materials are used to create smoking pipes. Just like clay, Briar was used to make smoking pipes until wood was introduced. The malleability of the material allowed the makers of pipes to cut them in any shape. 

Because it is molded, not carved, clay can be made up as a whole pipe, or only a bowl, but most other materials are made with separate, removable stems. Many contemporary calabash pipes are made of briar or another wood, maintaining the classic form, but using more affordable, durable materials. Wood pipes are completely different in feel and appearance from the most current glass and metal pipes. One of the most popular and commonly used materials to create pipes is wood. 

While briar is the most common wood used to make pipes, other woods make fine smoking instruments as well. While briar pipes are certainly the most popular, a variety of other woods are used by pipe makers as well (cherrywood being an example). Although not common, most types of woods may be used to create tobacco pipes. 

Pipes made of melonwood are great, but can burn out more easily than briar unless smoked and maintained carefully. Briarwood pipes are the easiest to adjust to for a new smoker, and are less likely to result in mouth-burn, burnout, and other typical problems of new smokers. 

Pipes can be made out of, and have been made of, just about any heat-resistant material, however, the majority of high-quality pipes available are made from briar wood (Erica arborea). The majority of pipes sold today, both hand-made and machine-made, are made from briar. Originally, pipes made from this material would be made of clay, however, these days, briar is the most common material, though a good amount of churchwardens are made of meerschaum as well. 

Regardless of the price, these pipes are very sought after due to the great smoking experience that they provide, as well as the appearance and feel. With the easy-carving qualities, pipes made of this material often include elaborate designs, which in turn may increase the price.
